What Happened, Apple?

December 6, 2011 by E. Rowan

Usually I don’t write that much about technology here, that’s more of my husband’s area. But I just have to warn everyone against doing the Lion update to your OS. My husband did it when it was released, because he likes to be on the edge of new stuff. And it destroyed his machine, not once, not twice, but three times. This is someone who is a professional technology consultant, and his entire office, and the only solution they could […]

The ignored island(s)

November 28, 2011 by E. Rowan

Puerto Rico has a special place in world literature: none. Or almost none. No one knows how to talk about it. It’s part of the U.S., but predominately Spanish-speaking. It’s part of Latin America, but significantly separate because of the U.S. government and economic control. Puerto Rico has been called “the oldest colony in the world.” And what happens in centuries-old colonies is a kind of hybridity and resistance that makes culture hard to categorize, and therefore harder to talk […]

Dropbox TOS Grants Translation Rights?!

July 4, 2011 by E. Rowan

Dropbox just became the focus of a debate over intellectual property on the internet. Defenders are quick to point out that Facebook, Youtube, even Google Documents have similar language in their terms of service/terms of use agreements. And that’s true. There are a couple of things to consider. One is the actual language of the contract, another is the actual use the company is making, and importantly (and what’s got everyone so worked up about Dropbox, I think) is the […]

Last day of my 20s

May 26, 2011 by E. Rowan

Today is the last day of my twenties. Weird. When I turned 16 I didn’t feel like I had accomplished all the things I’d wanted to by then (I know, I was weird then too). So I delayed the birthday, I refused to celebrate it and basically ignored it. 21 came and went with a glass of champagne and no big deal. 27, which is my “golden birthday” someone explained to me, and one I’d always looked forward to, was […]

Digital Minimalism

May 16, 2011 by E. Rowan

I mentioned that we’re moving to Iowa City in August. I lived there before, and am excited to live there again. It’s a fantastic community with the highest density of artists of all kinds I’ve ever seen. And you can actually afford quality of life, a phrase I didn’t understand at all, being from Boston, until I moved away from the East Coast. After a lot of talking we decided that we’re going to only move what we can fit […]

Apologies and Updates

May 16, 2011 by E. Rowan

I’ve been slacking in posting here. One reason is that I’m annoyed that both of the wordpress blogs I run (this one and American Literary Translator’s Blog) have had problems with disappearing side-bars, widgets and menus. I’m not super techy, but my husband is and he says it’s not just me, and that there’s no fix yet. Ugh. Another is that I’ve been traveling. First to PEN World Voices to attend the Best Translated Book Award ceremony (I had the […]

April 18, 2011 by E. Rowan

Copyediting Spam

March 31, 2011 by E. Rowan

We all get endless amounts of spam – and I usually just delete it, but sometimes the first few sentences are so poorly written that I just have to open and read it. And, of course, edit it: from John Smith <johnsmith099066@gmail.com> sender-time Sent at 12:33 AM (GMT-07:00). Current time there: 4:33 AM. [Interesting, your time zone is not Ireland but rather in the Pacific Standard Time Zone] reply-to johnsmith0996@i12.com [at least bother to standardize your sent from and reply to…] […]

Book Hoard

March 29, 2011 by E. Rowan

I’ve been struggling with what to do with my books in the face of impending moves. This seems like a great idea, if only I were in one place long enough to make it real:   Anyone in Boston want to set up a community library? I’ve got a collection of poetry and theory books that I’m looking to rehome….
